Malatestian Fortress

The Rocca Malatestiana in Cesena is one of the most imposing in Emilia Romagna. It is located in the heart of the city on top of the Garampo Hill, surrounded by the Parco della Rimembranza. It is possible to visit the battlements and enjoy the panorama, the view of which leads the eye as far as the sea, discover the suggestive internal walkways and the two central towers, one of which houses the Museum of Peasant Civilisation. The Rocca di Cesena, with its majestic bulk, is also a magical place to live: the beautiful inner courtyard offers spaces to enjoy the tranquillity of the fortress, savouring a piadina or a good glass of Sangiovese wine in the refreshment point present.

A bit of History

The Rocca is located in the centre of the city of Cesena, very close to Piazza del Popolo. It is situated on top of the Garampo Hill and surrounded by the Parco della Rimembranza. The Fortress is characterised by its majestic bulk, panoramic terraces and suggestive walkways within the curtain walls. Museum of the History of Agriculture is housed. The
building of the fortress began in 1380 with Galeotto Malatesta, continued by his successors Andrea and Malatesta Novello, and was completely renovated and completed in 1477, during papal rule.The Rocca is part of a larger system of fortifications surrounding the city, a system that also fascinated Leonardo da Vinci when he stayed in Cesena in the summer of 1502, commissioned by Cesare Borgia to inspect and overhaul the fortifications of the conquered jurisdictions and improve the defences. Some drawings of the Rocca remain as his testimonies (the walls of the Rocca Vecchia and Rocca Nuova, the Rastelli, with the Porta Maestra), the complete survey of the city walls, and notes on the customs and traditions of Romagna, jotted down in his notebook, now kept at the Library of the French Institute in Paris.
